President’s Message December 2015

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE for December, 2015

It’s been a very Happy Year, 2015!  Can’t wait for more action in 2016!

As you know, I wrapped on Black Friday and pulled in $67.10 from the crowd at B & N.  Last week on Christmas Eve, Kathy Freeman, Maureen Martin and her friend, Cynthia Lehman, came to join me wrap!  What fun, but the most fun was counting the money raised….$299.66!!!  Yahooo…for a total of $366.76.  We met a lot of cool people who were glad to give.

Also last week Tuesday, I met with Sharan Sturdavant from Cedar Springs, our first recipient of our Hear For Good hearing aids.  DHHS’s Nancy Cluley interviewed her as a candidate for our program and she was ecstatic to know that someone finally could help her.  She has had hearing loss for most of her life along with a speech impediment.  She found help for her speech but she still needed hearing aids.  She has been tested by three different audiologists in hopes that someone, or some way, she could get help.

Today, I received a voice mail from her husband, Eric, who is just as excited about the hearing aids as she is!  I called back and reached Eric.  He handed the phone to Sharan and told me her fittings would be tomorrow at Kaczmarski Hearing Center!  It only took one week to get the reconditioned hearing aids to her with her specific needs.  Starkey is an amazing company!

Kaczmarski is a terrific company as well.  They are the only independent audiology center in West Michigan.  Beckie Kaczmarski was more than willing to give her time, her employee’s time and talent to make this a dream come true at Christmas for someone who has been waiting so long for someone to come forward.

We are the ones who have made a new life for Sharan.  I’m so proud that we can all, collectively, with agency and audiologists’, support to make a difference.

I hope your dreams come true, too, in 2016.

Quota International Service eNewsletter July 2015

A personal message from the Board to increase awareness and understanding about Quota’s three core areas of service: World Service; Women and Children; Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing, and Speech-Impaired.
Celebrating Quota International with President Karen
A whirlwind of love, experiences, and community insight, encompassed much of Quota International’s first year of regional meetings. From California to the Philippines, Quotarians shared projects and helpful tips that can increase the impact our organization has on the world at large. This year, the Board attended these meetings, and returned to their home clubs with a renewed love of Quota and respect for all of the volunteers working tirelessly to make a difference. Read the full accounts from President-elect/ Treasurer Marie, VP Jeanette, VP Cindy, and VP Emile at www.teamquota.org.
Development and Growth with VP Marie
Quota International members around the world are always interested in learning new ways to positively impact their communities. After an exciting visit to some of Quota’s first regional meetings, President-elect/Treasurer Marie offers up another great project idea for Quotarians to enjoy around the world!  READ MORE
Delivering World Service with VP Jeanette
“Dress a Girl” is a service project the members of Quota International of Whakatane, New Zealand started to support young girls, by hand sewing simple dresses that grow with the child. These Quotarians discovered that there was an extreme need for girls living in impoverished countries to have their own dresses to wear on a daily basis. When too many girls living in impoverished countries do not own more than a ragged t-shirt, these handmade dresses are invaluable, especially in the places where young girls are taken from their villages to be used as sex slaves every day. READ MORE
Investing in Deaf Resources with VP Cindy
Over the last few months, while attending many of the regional meetings, I have been so impressed and proud of the wonderful service work that is being done in your local communities in the name of Quota! One very worthwhile service project, “Quota’s Hear for Good” by Quota International of Grand Rapids, MI, United States stood out to me because it can easily be duplicated in many of our communities around the world. Empowering Women and Ensuring Child Development with VP Emilie
It was an overwhelming pleasure to witness the QuoCKa reading project, managed by Quota International of Beenleigh, Queensland, Australia during the Region 13 meeting. This outreach project, where club members, Junior Quotarians, and local police read to 3rd graders at a local primary school, generates an interest and loved of reading in children at an early and critical age. President’s Message for June 25, 2015

Quotarians – YOU are amazing people!  You have embraced our mission, our vision and our new format so well.  We are making extraordinary progress in accomplishing our goals to improve our Club!!  We are moving forward with energy, enthusiasm and strength.

I was emailed a copy of our credits toward the Hear For Good program.  I recently had a meeting with Gillian Borkowski at Hear USA.  Some of you may know her from past years in Quota.  She is an outstanding audiologist who continues to share our quest to help the deaf and hard of hearing. Her clients recycle their old hearing aids with her company.recyclesymbol

She graciously gave us a box filled with used parts, totally a donation of 1,237 points!!  We are now at 1,974 and I couldn’t be more proud of the progress we have made!  FABULOUS!

More good news will be coming.  I’m doing these messages in smaller bites rather than one message a month.

Thank you for your support!

Martha

Why, Do Babies Fly Planes?

This question comes up when we say “we bought Pilot Caps” for deaf infants at 2 local schools.

Pilot Cap

Babies don’t fly planes, but some have cochlear implants, or hearing aids, and the caps help them to stay in place.

PilotCap2

This thank you from a teacher says it all:

Pilot Caps“Dear Quota Club,

Thank you so very much for the donation to receive 10 pilot caps for our deaf babies.  It is so important for the babies to keep their hearing aid(s) in and the pilot caps do wonders to achieve this goal.”

Sincerely,

Jane Swainston

President’s Message – A new chapter for Quota

We are about to start a new chapter for Quota. It is one that embodies our spirit, our cause and the lives of others. We can do this.

Over the next month or so, we’ll be launching a new approach to our mission. One that is created by what we do, why we do it and the outcome we want. It includes other people who may not have the same dedicated passion as we do about the deaf and hard of hearing, but they are looking for some new knowledge, experiences and opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Many of you have ‘grown up’ with Quota. Some of the people you have admired have left our Club and those mentors are still available to you now as friends you see at social events. But the spark continues in all of us to move forward to let the next generation know that we have so much more to give. You have kindled the fire for so many years and now it’s time for us to build a new fire.

Several other deaf/hard of hearing associations have recently folded. But we’re not. We’re going to collect people with the skills, time and energy to assist in our mission. We’re going to tap into new populations with new mind sets to help us reach the community we serve. We’re going to invite them to lifelong learning.

With volunteers as our partners, we can teach, mentor, enlighten, encourage and learn from each other. Not in a formal manner, like a classroom, but in groups and teams with a problem to solve. Each one of us has something to share, teach and inspire. Each one of us uses our talents and skills every single day. Let’s share what we know.

One of the biggest reasons people don’t want to volunteer is that they feel like they don’t get to use their skills. By golly, we have a place for them on our team!

Every day I learn something new. Something about a Club member, something about the deaf community, something I need to improve about myself.
That’s what keeps me going for more.
