Cool Cats

Picnic with our new Junior Quota Members (gift ideas & list of students)

We have asked the Cool Cats and several other students to join together to form a JQ!!  We have invited all of them (there are eighteen students) to join us at our June meeting (click here to see the invitation). This will be a picnic at Centennial.

As we have in the past few years; we will be providing them with summer activities. They often are lonely and bored during summer vacation. We want to support their continued education and to give them fun and exciting activities to keep them stimulated!

Below is the sign-up sheet. Thank you to everyone who volunteered!! We are only looking to spend $15.00 to keep it fair to everyone. Kim will be bringing fun extras for all of the students.

If you need more suggestions for gift ideas, please contact me. We just ask that you remember their reading level is around 1st-2nd grade, so age-appropriate items may not be the best gift. If you aren’t sure, ask me!

Please let me know who you would like to sign up for by June 7th.

Gift ideas:

  • year subscription to National Geographics for Kids is ($15.00)
  • seed starter indoor kit w/ a variety of seeds that could be split up & given to each
  • any type of word search activity book

Making a difference

I thought you all might be interested in seeing how we can make a difference.  This is a note I received from Teri, Carlos’ teacher consultant:

Carlos had a great time.  That was the first time in his life roasting marshmallows.  He had such a big smile on his face telling me about the scavenger hunt and the fire and what not.  It is so heartwarming to see how these things make him so happy!

Thanks for all you do for Carlos and the others.

(Carlos is in the foreground in the aqua shirt, eating his dinner)

In addition, I saw Cindy today and she described his reaction to seeing marshmallows roasted over a fire:  it was more than just a smile–he was incredulous.
Carlos is a wonderful young man who is, as yet, undiscovered.  I’m so glad we are able to include him in our activities as I know he has much to offer the world around him.
Thank you, camp counselors.

Thanks to Martha and Cathy for all of their hard work creating a “Camp” for the Cool Cats (and friends, we had four other students from the G.R.O.D. program: Brija and Megi DeMeester who go to Eastside Christian, Zedin Kujovic goes to FH Central, and Christopher goes to FH Eastern)!! Thank you to Pat for hosting and taking the photos and to Diane, Maureen, Kathy and Heather who all came out to be Quota Counselors!!

Here are a few pictures from Winter Camp.

2012 Bookfair photos

Did you miss the bookfair last Saturday? Here’s a peak at what you missed (hopefully you remembered to shop online). Thanks to Pat for snapping these photos!

Thank you to the Cool Cats (to their teachers and their parents) who came by and did an outstanding job performing and showcasing their talents.

They sang “Stand Up”, they danced and even performed a small part of their play.

We had plenty of activities to keep the shoppers busy. Wendy Docter helped out at the bookmark table.

We had story time with college students. The two ladies are from Baker Community College, the Interpreter Program. Mike Atwood is a student at Gallaudet University. They taught the listeners sign language.

We had a Scavenger Hunt with the Cool Cats…

Quoc Viet was the first to finish! He won a B & N gift card!

Thank you to Paws with a Cause. Several Assistance Dogs were in attendance and were on their best behavior.

Thanks to all who came out to volunteer!

A big thank you to Kim for her wonderful leadership in another successful fundraiser.

Baking with the Cool Cats on Sweetest Day

October 15, 2011

Quota led the Cool Cats in another class in the kitchen. This time it was baking, perfect for Sweetest Day!

We made Rice Krispy Treats, Chocolate Scotcheroos, Oreo Truffles, Apple Crisp and Cinnamon brownies.

Here are a few photos.

Sanel gets caught licking the bowl!

Grace carries the Oreo Truffles to the fridge.

Marsalais carefully measures out ingredients for the Apple Crisp while Martel and Sanel watch.

CJ helps tie Miss Cindy’s apron.

Anna adds the oil for the Rice Krispy treats while Summer watches.

Nicole, Grace and Amy read through the instructions for the brownies.

A big thanks to the Cool Cats for coming and being the best students. A big thank you to Kath for her generosity and hospitality as we took over her kitchens. And a big thank you to all the Quotarians for your time and donations!
