Pat recently returned from China! She has been a member of Quota for five years! She enjoys snacking on Muesli bars while watching her favorite movie, “Mostly Martha”.

Pat was asked if she has ever gone without food for 24 hours or more?  She never has.

The most useless gift she has ever received was…   ‘Evening in Paris’ perfume.

Pat was asked; which would be better? Having the ability to make valuable things with her hands or owning a merchant ship that travels the world?  Pat chose to have the ability. She wisely adds –a ship can sink.

What if her nose grew longer each time she lied?  She replied she can’t even imagine–gravity wouldn’t help!

Pat’s favorite language to hear spoken? She says Italian.

Thanks to Pat for sharing a little bit about herself! We welcome her back and hope to hear many fun stories about her two years abroad!

The Service Committee and Project Leaders met July 7, 2010 to coordinate projects and events for the year.  The following is a recap of the projects and their Leaders.

Ideas were given for each project and some dates were established for events that are already known.  Once the Project Leaders meet with their committees and organize each event, they will post final dates and details on the blog.

The Communications Committee will coordinate photo ops for certain events with Pam Howland assisting with taking photos when funds are disbursed under the grant program.

A new grant procedure is being implemented.  Submission deadline dates will be established and the Service Committee will review all requests on a quarterly basis and will respond after the quarterly meeting.  Maureen Martin will make everyone aware of the deadline dates.

As you can see, we have a lot of exciting service events happening this year and we are off to a great start!

Sad News

Peggy Bishop told us that her daughter Angela and husband lost their baby.  Very sad news for the family that had experienced such joy for the last five months.  Our condolences go out to the family.

Getting to Know You

In interest of time, Emily presented the getting to know you on Pam Goebel and Maureen Martin.

Update on Shawnee Park Courtyard – Cleanup was held on May 8^th.  Cathy K, reported a full crew consisting of Pam G, Anna M. B., Kathy S, Kim S, Maureen M, and Sue Scharf.  With help from Cool Cats Martel and previous student Marsalais, we left the courtyard in tip top shape.  It was great working with Martel and Marsalais – they were a big help.

Consent Agenda

Emily asked for a motion on the consent agenda.  Motion was given by Robin Keith and seconded by Jan Gauthier.

Red Apple – Robin did not delete “family” photos from her Conference photos.  Turn around is fair play, so Robin fined all those not attending Conference.

Raffle – Kim S. donated the Keys to Graceland which were won by Melissa Hoezee.

Picnic

Two Cool Cats were still available as buddies – Kim S. and Kathy S.  will be buddies with Amy Docter and Maureen M. and Cathy F. will be buddies with Quoc Veit.

The Cool Cats picnic will be held on June 17^th, 5:30 at Riverside Park.  Use the Boat Launch #2 entrance.  I don’t believe that we have reserved a spot, so it might be a good idea to bring an extra lawn chair if you can.

So far, Pam Howland, Elaine Carr and Kim Savoie have visited the Cool Cats classroom, as well as Emily of course!  All were impressed.

District Conference Overview:

Cathy Kaiser was the recipient of the Jane Peth award at District level.  This award is new this year and is given to a person who is steadfast, caring for fellow Quotarians and committed to Quota’s success.  Congratulations Cathy!

Kim Savoie talked about our invitation to next years District Conference.  She showed the video with our own movie star (Emily).  Everyone seemed enthusiastic and loved the invitation.  She reminded us how much we all enjoy seeing our District friends and how great it is to attend Conference.  The Conference video was edited by Pam Howland’s son David.

Gross District sales was $421.00, which included the Cool Cats Quilt raffle, pad folios, visors, etc. (Koeze costs still have to be subtracted from that number.)

President’s Message – July 2010

Summer is in full swing and our favorite tv shows have long been forgotten as they ended with their usual season finale drama. They hope to keep us in suspense for the summer; wondering, questioning, and waiting impatiently for the new season to start. That is what the big-wigs in tv hope for anyway. But how many of us soon forget as we get outside in the sunshine, spending time grilling, and enjoying all the other fun activities that summer brings?

Summer brings Quotarians the chance to relax and catch up. Business is set aside for a few months while we picnic with the Cool Cats and are welcomed at Joyce’s. This year it also brings the International Convention. I am looking forward to attending and representing our club. If you have any questions or information you would like me to bring back, please let me know by Thursday, July 1st. I will post a post-Convention update so be sure to check back to find out what exciting information I bring back.

For now, I hope you all enjoy the summer. Happy 4th of July!! (Celebrate for me – I hope there are some fireworks in Vancouver?!) Fundraising Events

The fin/fun committee has not met, but Emails went out to the chairs of our fundraising projects.

Quota walk-Kath Slagal will be chairing the walk in September and plans on securing Riverside Park when she returns from vacation.

Barnes & Noble-Kim Savoie is chairing the Barnes and Noble event and has a committee meeting scheduled for July 20 at 5:00 p.m. at her office.  Our mall date has been set for January 8, 2011.  Kim has many exciting ideas to share with her committee.  Stay tuned…

Holiday shopping extravaganza-Peggy Bishop is heading this project up and has a committee meeting scheduled for July 22 at noon at the downtown Holiday Inn.

Conference sales-A big thanks to Maureen Martin for coordinating club sales at District Conference. We have a small supply of Koeze nuts available for your immediate purchase. Please contact Maureen.

Financial update

Final year end reports for the Club and Foundation have been finalized.  Peggy Bishop will file the required 990-N forms with the IRS.

Diane Friar has volunteered to do our internal inspection of the Club and Foundation this year.  Thanks Diane, we look forward to your report.

1. QUOTA MOURNS DEATH OF PIP DOLORES BROSKY

Quota International mourns the loss of Past International President Dolores Brosky, 74, who died June 5, 2010. Dolores served as international president in 2001-2002, and her presidential theme, Brighten Our World with Quota, reflected her positive, inspirational view that Quota’s greatest purpose was to help others and to do so with a happy heart.

Long after her presidency, Dolores continued to support Quota locally and internationally and faithfully traveled to Quota’s conventions. She regularly came to Washington in between convention years to support the new Quota president installed at that time.

“I like to think that Dolores’ light will continue to shine through the acts of kindness and gentleness that Quota members express every day, said Quota Executive Director Kathleen. “ I think it would please Dolores to be remembered in that way.”

Melissa is celebrating her fifth year in Quota this year! Her favorite snack is popcorn which she enjoys while she’s watching her favorite movie: “Ice Castles”.

Melissa was asked if she has ever run in a marathon, she has not.

The one thing her grandparents taught her was… Live life to its fullest.

She was asked: which would be better? Listening to a riveting story on the radio or watching a lame story on TV. Melissa chose listening to the radio.

What if Melissa could fly?  Her reply: Not in this lifetime

What is her favorite bad movie? Batman

Ginny sent a card to the club thanking us for the flowers we sent. The card reads: (outside) “For A Special Friendship… (inside) To My Caring Friends I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate our friendship and I’m glad we have each other to always count on. -Thanks a million”

She included the following letter:

“I walked outside to feed my dog (Sandy) and there on the table on my porch was a gorgeous plant from Eastern Floral.

The big blue and white container held a plant with big green leaves and delicate white flowers called Cyclamen. Beautiful! You made me feel like the queen of the show. Quota friends really do care. Thank you and thank you again.

My agenda does not include losing my balance over nothing and injuring my hip again. See you soon and I hope with out a cane which I put down and can’t find most of the time.”

What is it about volunteering that makes us feel good? Is it helping others? Giving back? Learning new things? Meeting new and fun people? Going to new places?

For me, Quota has been all of those things and so much more. For those of us who have volunteered in our Community and Quota know the benefits offered. We may not always see the results of our work, but we know how we have been effected. Take this example;

Ruthie Culver drives three miles from her condo in Sun City, AZ to the Banner Boswell Medical Center for her four-hour volunteer shift. Ruthie is 103 and has racked up more than 1,200 volunteer hours in the past six years!!! If she can do this at her age, what’s everyone else’s excuse? (Reader’s Digest, 2010. As I said, Quota has now made a positive impact on my life. If it weren’t for Quota I would not know the Cool Cats. If it weren’t for Quota I wouldn’t have traveled to Traverse City, East Tawas, and soon Vancouver. If it weren’t for Quota, I wouldn’t have the connections I’ve made.

You have asked me before how do we get more younger people involved? I don’t have the answer. I am an exception to the rule. I enjoy serving others and giving of my time. My question for you is: have you asked younger people to come to a meeting? Have you told them about our work with the Cool Cats?

We all know why it is important to serve others. We need to continue to find and encourage those around us to do the same. Make sure you tell people about Quota, the work we do and the fun we have. Be sure you ask everyone you meet if they find service in the community important. Most of all share your experiences.
