I’m going to show you a picture of my lovely daughter.
Now don’t be scared! This is Katy on Halloween. She is a sugar skull; a character from the Day of the Dead. She’s been running around the house for a couple of days like this as she practices putting on her make-up. She’s had a really good time lurking in dark rooms or hallways and stepping out as my husband and I have walked by, just to spook the heck out of us!
Why do I bring this up now that Halloween is behind us? It’s because she learned about the Day of the Dead from books. Reading about this in Spanish class last year inspired this year’s Halloween costume.
The things we read stay with us for a long time; even a lifetime. Coming up is the annual Quota International of Grand Rapids Barnes & Noble book fair. Not only is this an important fundraiser for our organization, it’s an opportunity for us to be exposed to many worlds through the books and magazines that can be found at Barnes & Noble. It also is great fun for our JQ members as they participate in a scavenger hunt through the store.
