April President’s Message
Spring has definitely sprung in West Michigan. High temperature records were set putting all flora and fauna into confusion. Owls are hooting all day long, turkeys are gobbling non-stop, trees and flowers are blooming with vigor. I must admit to confusion as well, but have been spending every spare moment outside, no questions asked! This was truly the best March I have spent in my 27 years as a resident here and hope you are all as cheerful as I feel.
Our March service project was lots of fun. Tracy Van Solkema came to our meeting to speak to us about Kids’ Food Basket, an organization that provides local disadvantaged children with after-school nutritious sack suppers. There are 170 volunteers who help make this a vital successful program serving 4500 kids each day. We joined the cadre of volunteers by decorating sacks to be used for the suppers. As soon as Tracy was out the door, I heard the stamps pounding as our Grand Rapids Quotarians got to work with their usual zest. After less than 30 minutes, we sent over 400 beautiful bags as well as individual donations of juice boxes and generous personal checks to KFB. How could we not give to a group whose brochure says: “Making a Difference”? Thanks to all those who brought their creative talents to help bring a smile to a child’s face.
Also, in March, we chose a Quotarian of the Year, soon to be announced; we became informed about how to start a branch, discussed the possibility of a JQ club, and finished up annual reports. At the March meeting we held elections, so now we look forward to April 19 when we will install our awesome newly elected officers. You have each received an invitation so please reply soon and plan to come to the Installation Banquet at Cascade Country Club.
As I reflect on the year, I think of the times after our meetings when I overheard the parting words, “That was fun!” I have truly enjoyed this year of fun and learning as President and I am grateful to each one of our members for being who she is while helping to make our dreams come true. Eleanor Roosevelt said, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams….” Quota International of Grand Rapids has its future secure in those who believe in the dreams of our club. I look forward to the year ahead as an active Quota Club member. Meanwhile, if you need me for anything, I’ll be reading the Eleanor Roosevelt biography that has been waiting for me on the shelf for way too many years! You can call me for quotes.
